2024 Author Website Design Trends Forecast

Fluid Builds: For the longest time in web design, we’ve seen clean, stacked content as the standard. However, fluid and adaptable builds are now becoming the hot new trend. Fluid designs give authors the flexibility to put content wherever they want, without being confined to a rigid layout. Here’s an example from Zajno:

Video And Animation: Mobile-friendly designs have reigned supreme for the past few years, especially with 92.3% of Internet users accessing websites and apps through a mobile device. As a result, larger content like videos and animation had to be eliminated from website designs because they were difficult to adapt and load on smaller screens. However, smart device capabilities have increased tenfold in the past year, and smartphones and tablets can now accept almost any kind of media. This means that elements like video headers, animated hero sections, and moving banners are making a comeback.

Retro Aesthetics: If you’ve spent any time on TikTok (or at your local mall), you’ve probably noticed late-’90s to early 2000s clothing and accessories making a comeback. Also called Y2K style, this retro aesthetic is making waves in the web design world as well. Websites with this style typically feature bright colors, pixelated graphics, and funky fonts. Check out a sample below from Wix:

Oversized text: Website designs, especially in terms of fonts and typography, typically follow a standard format: large heading and title text, medium-sized sub-heading text, and small body text. But now we’re seeing a shift toward dramatic, oversized text for a variety of elements. This gives websites an overstated, maximalist look, which is a bold departure from previous, minimalistic trends. Take a look at this example from The Variable:

Sustainable Website Design: Many website owners are making an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. You may think you can only achieve this by taking public transportation or recycling, but efforts to go green can extend to your author website as well! Sustainable website design attempts to limit electrical consumption and digital storage space by optimizing websites for quick and efficient use. This can mean combining content onto a single web page rather than having dozens of pages and subpages. Another option is to compress large media files using plugins like Smush (which cuts down on file sizes without reducing the quality of the content).

AI Art: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been taking over the art world—and it is now being used to enhance author websites too. Many websites now feature artificially generated images, which tap into scores of images available online to create customized art in seconds. While AI-generated art is still in its infancy and cannot replace the personal touch of commissioned artwork from a real-life designer, it does allow for quick, high-quality visual content that, in a pinch, can be incorporated into website designs (Note: you cannot copyright AI-generated images).

Working with the Web Design Relief team was a total pleasure. They made the process easy, in-depth, professional, and lyrical. I cannot possibly detail how professional and helpful Web Design Relief has been in helping me launch my collection of short stories—there are just too many things they have done! They’ve been there for me all along the way, guiding me in developing my book and into the 21st century of web design and social media platforms. It could have been a bewildering journey; Instead it was one that was organized and so pleasant. Truly, Web Design Relief has blown me away by what they have created. The first time I watched my book trailer (who knew there were book trailers?), I cried. That team perfectly imaged what my book is about. I want to thank the whole team for their skill and creativity. I appreciate it so much.
